2006 Statement

" In today's world, for the first time in human history, the fleeting and transient, the throwaway and ever novel, and the virtual or mediated predominate over what is lasting, substantial, and 'real' or 'true'." Ellen Dissanayake, 'Hands and Minds' Peter Dormer lecture series, 1999, Royal College of Art

Stephen Bottomley’s jewellery aims to capture moments from a digital age in a craft context. The jewellery created typically displays low relief texture and pattern drawn from digital design or photography. These surfaces are applied to precious metal structures that explore proportion and rhythm to express clarity of form and function.

He strongly advocates the integration of contemporary tools - like computer aided design and manufacture - alongside the traditional techniques to expand contemporary craft practice.
“My work plays on the inherent differences of these two arenas- one the product of our time, the other the tradition of our discipline. Where these two worlds interweave is a new territory that stimulates ideas and imaginations.”

Stephen Bottomley divides his time between his studio practice and current work as the Course leader for Sheffield Hallam University’s Metalwork and Jewellery programme, between 2004 –07 he has also been the chairman of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery (www.acj.org.uk) . Work can be viewed on-line at the Crafts Council Photo-Store gallery and is represented in collections in the UK and USA, including the British Museum and the South East Arts Crafts Collection
