Stephen Bottomley aims to capture moments from a digital age in a craft context. Jewellery typically explores pattern, low relief texture drawn from digital design or photography and applied to precious metals and mixed media. Bottomley strongly advocates the integration of contemporary tools - like computer aided design and manufacture - alongside the traditional techniques to extend the boundaries of contemporary studio practice. He divides his time between his studio practice and lecturing work as the Course leader for Sheffield Hallam University’s Metalwork and Jewellery.
“My work plays on the inherent differences of these two arenas- one the product of our time, the other the tradition of our discipline. Where these two worlds interweave is a new territory that stimulates ideas and imaginations.”
